Southgate M1’s News – Issue 2

After a break over the Bank Holiday weekend, the Southgate M1’s preparation for the start of the England Hockey Premier League picks up again this coming weekend in earnest. The mighty Gate take on not 1, but 2 of the country’s top 3 ranked teams in friendly matches this w-end. On Saturday, 01 September, as part of the Southgate Club Day festivities, Southgate take on East Grinstead at 15h30 at Snakes Lane, as the days main event. It should be a great display of top level hockey, and while both teams will be missing a few key players , it should be a great match, so if you aren’t already at the club taking party in the Club Day activities, then at the very least get yourself down to the club to support the M1’s, and get another taster of the upcoming quality of the Premier League season which is fast approaching. On Sunday the M1’s travel away to Repton School (near Nottingham), to take part in a Beeston HC/Repton School joint festival, and our M1’s will be playing Beeston HC in another friendly starting at 11h30 on the school waterbased pitch. In case you have been following - the Southgate M1’s have a very busy pre-season schedule to prepare them for the upcoming Premier League season, and have arranged some tough friendlies which include EG, Beeston, and also 2 matches against Reading. We also play Old Loughts at Southgate, on Tuesday, 04 Sep at 20h30, and play in a Bromley Beckenham Festival over the w-end 08/09 Sep. The Premier League season starts with an away trip to Loughborough Students on Saturday, 15 Sep. The 2 friendly matches played over the w-end  18/19 August against Reading and Wimbledon, both ended in a 2-2 draw, and while all 3 teams were missing quite a few players, there were still international players representing all the teams, and the matches were of a high standard. From our point of view, it was pleasing to come away from the w-end with 2 good performances, and 3 of the 4 goals over the w-end scored by Southgate - were scored by new players joining the club which is also exciting. Another great feature was the increased quality of play from players who represented our successful M2’s last season, who all stepped up to the M1’s and showed themselves in a very good light. This all bodes very well for the upcoming season and the quality throughout our top 2 Men’s squads is looking like being the best it has been at the club for many years. Let’s hope that when the season starts, that the results on the pitch uphold this statement!
