This Sunday, Head Coach John Shaw will be running “Hockey Basics” sessions for parents where he will be going through some of the basics that we are coaching the kids.  Nothing strenuous, but you will be given stick and ball and asked to have a go.

There will be two sessions 10-10.30, and another at 11.45 – 12.15.

So that we have an idea of numbers, please let me know if you like to take part and which time.

7 July – end of year, festival, awards, BBQ
(note, there is no junior hockey on 23 June because of Southgate Sixes Festival)2 – Age groups changing for the Summer Term
During the summer term we will be moving players up into their age groups for next season.  This will enable us to start preparing teams and groups early and will allow us to bring in the children who have been on the waiting list.
The main change will be for children, currently in year 7 at school, who will move from the 9.30 session to the 11.15am session.

3 – Sunday 7 July – End of year festival, awards and BBQ
Put this date in your diary now!
This festival is a celebration of Southgate Junior Hockey. Every child can be involved from age 6 to 18 with concurrent tournaments for each age group.  The games are in the morning from 9.30 – 12.30 and it is followed by our player of the year awards and a BBQ.  Details will be sent out during the summer term.

4 – Results over the Easter Break
A number of teams have been in action since our last session in March.
U12 Boys won the County tournament and are playing in the Regionals this Sunday
U12 Girls narrowly missed the finals of the county tournament going out on flicks.
U14 Girls narrowly missed the progressing to the Nationals in a very tight Regional competition.  They lost their quarter final of the Home Counties League in another very close game.
U14 Boys came 3rd in their regional finals
U16 Boys narrowly missed out on progressing to the final of the National Finals weekend.  They have progressed to the finals of the Home Counties on 5th May.
An U10 mixed team came 2nd in the Milton Keynes Festival
U12 girls and U12 Boys won their tournaments at the Milton Keynes festival.

Our Mens 1s lost 2 out of their 3 matches at the playoffs, and unfortunately this means they have been demoted into the National Conference League. Still good quality hockey , but not where we want to be.  After a short break they start working on getting themselves back into the Prem.

Southgate Junior Hockey News 10 March 2013 – Gum shields‏

Gums shields

A self moulded or boil’n’bite gum shield is not nearly as reliable or protective as a custom made gum shield.  The custom made gum shield is made from an impression of your teeth and so fits you perfectly.

Matthew Sayer, dad of Jasmine and Lillianne, is a dentist and offers all Southgate players a special deal.
Basic Gumshield – £45
Basic with name – £55
Mixed colour with name £60

If you would like to arrange a fitting, contact Matthew direct and he will arrange a time and date on a Sunday to do the fitting. matthewsayar@yahoo.co.uk
Southgate Shirts – have you borrowed on and still have it

If you have borrowed a Southgate shirt for a match and still have it, please could you return it as soon as possible.  We are approaching playoff and finals times and our teams need numbered shirts for these games.  1 missing shirt can render a whole strip unusable.

So, please, please, please, if you forgot to give it back after a game and still have it, return it this week, or next at the latest.

Junior News 1 March 2013

England U15 honours

Congratulations to Duncan Scott and Tom Crowson who have been selected for England U15 Camp in May.

Mens 1s v Cannock – Sunday 3 March
After 2 wins in their last 3 matches the M1′s are playing some great hockey and moving up the league table. This Sunday at 2pm they play Cannock and after losing a close 4-5 loss away in the first half of the season, they are looking to turn the tables this Sunday at home. So come on down and voice your support for our top mens side.

Our junior ball boys, Lucca, Louis and Charles will be in action running up and down the side lines helping to make the game even faster.  1 more ball boy/girl is required for this Sunday, so contact me quick if you want to be part of the ball patrol team.

Stop the Clock – Win £100.
We have a 24 hour clock, sealed in a box with a battery about to run out.  What time will the clock stop?  Guess right and you will win £100.
During March you can buy minutes for £1 each. Our minute sellers, will be circulating through the club house on Saturdays and Sundays.
The box will be opened after the M1s game on 24th March.

Housekeeping – Getting to and from the far pitch
When making your way to and from the far pitch, please do not walk across the water pitch but use the lovely new paths round the outside.  We have had players try and walk through during training sessions and even matches!

Housekeeping – Keeping the middle section clean
The middle section between the two pitches is great now that it has been turfed but we need to keep it clean.  Please do not walk onto the area if you have been on the grass or take dogs on it.

1-Summer training starts this Sunday
2-Summer festival, BBQ and Awards day – Sunday 1 July
3-Pitch replacement Raffle
4-Pitch replacement project
5-Website help needed
6-Shop opening

1-Summer training starts Sunday 13 May
Our Sunday training for the summer term starts on Sunday.  We train every Sunday except 24 June, until 1st July when we have our festival.
For the first few weeks while the pitch work is happening, the site is quite messy, so please be careful when walking round the site.  We will also be training on just one pitch for a few weeks until both pitches are completed.

2-End of year festival, awards and BBQ
This year it takes place on Sunday 1st July.  Please put it in your diary now.  The festival will be from 9am-12.30, followed by a BBQ and our awards ceremony.

3-Pitch replacement raffle
Thank you to everyone who bought and sold raffle tickets.  £2800 was raised for the pitch replacement project.  Winners of the prizes were:
1st  prize  Edith Sanchez:   2 pairs of Olympic Hockey Tickets
2nd prize  Flyodie :     iPad 2
3rd prize   Alison Smith from Bowdon:     Fine Wine
4th prize   Zak Wizbek:  a pair of Olympic Hockey Tickets
5th prize Laurance Taylor (Flagons captain): a pair of Olympic Hockey Tickets
6th Prize Simeon Bird:    Reves casual shirt
7th Prize Rob Shilling:    Reves Casual shirt
8th Prize The Shrimptons (juniors):  Reves Casual shirt

4-Pitch replacement Project
The pitch replacement project is progressing and the water pitch is into its last phase.  Unfortunately when the carpet was lifted, we found that the shock pad underneath had deteriorated and had to be replaced. This has delayed the water pitch completion date and cost a lot more money. Work has started on the new paths and paving around the pitch.  As you can imagine with all the rain we have had recently, there have been times when we thought a swimming pool was being installed.  The rain does affect progress but overall the contractors are miraculously still on time!

Before Easter every member was sent a fundraising appeal pack from the Southgate Sports and Leisure Trust.  If you are able to support the appeal, please contact them ASAP as the funds raised now will help more of the planned works to be done.

5-Website help needed
Do you have website design and build skills?  We are looking for some help with our website www.southgatehc.org.uk.  In particular we need a front page that helps visitors and members see the breadth of our club’s activities and quickly access important areas of the site.  If you think you can help, please contact me.

6- Shop opening
The shop will be open this Sunday, 13th May,  and next 20th May, from 9.30-11.30am.

New Pitches Project and Fund Raising – THE BIG RAFFLE

During April and May we’re having brand-spanking new pitches laid to ensure we continue to boast some of the finest hockey facilities in the country.

This has been made possible thanks to the careful squirreling away of Club funds over the past 13 years. The good news is that we have most of the money we need – we just need YOU to help us raise a bit more.

After the resounding success of the Club’s Big Raffle four years ago – which raised an incredible £5,000 -  we’re doing another Big Raffle this year.

GREAT PRIZES – Including Olympics tickets
And the prizes on offer are fabulous including tickets to watch Olympic hockey this summer!

Tickets will be on sale the next two Sundays at Juniors. All we need you to do is to buy some tickets, but also to sell as many as possible to your friends, family and work colleagues… in fact anyone who wants one! There’ll be prizes for the team and individual that sells the most tickets.

The raffle will be drawn at the club dinner on Friday, April 20th.

Volunteer NOW: I need a volunteer to sell tickets on Sunday.  If you are able to help, please let me know ASAP.
