M1s battle to another win on road beating Chichester 1-0

M1s battle to another win on the road beating Chichester 1-0.

While this may have been a low scoring match, it was far from dull with chances at both ends throughout the match.

Southgate started brightly, dominating possession with Chichester happy to sit back and play half court, looking to catch the London team on the break. Against these tactics, Southgate struggled to breakdown the packed Chichester defence, however they got the opening goal in the sixteenth minute when Tyler Sundeen’s close range snap shot was deflected up and Kit Cutter was on hand to volley home past Macjec Pacanowski in the Chichester goal.

Chichester tactics nearly paid off and Southgate were thankful for goalkeeper Chris Rae being ever alert and making a couple of timely saves.

The second half was equally tight, with both sides having penalty corner chances and both keepers being forced into action. Southgate had a golden opportunity to extend their lead after Aedan McCrossan was pushed in the circle, however Brew Durkin’s penalty stroke was easily saved by Pacanowski.

As the half progressed, Chichester were forced to come out to chase the game and this actually enabled Southgate to control the match finding more space in midfield, and despite Chichester taking their goalkeeper off for the last couple of minutes, Southgate were able to close out the match and chalk up their fifth win.

The M1s are on the road again next week playing London neighbours Old Loughts in their first match since the Essex side won promotion back to the Conference last season.
