The chips fall Southgate’s way

Match Report : Jo Price

Result : WIN 4-0

Another week of endlessly moving parts, this time accompanied by freezing weather.  By Wednesday we had ten players, dropping to eight then seven as the W4s’ numbers dropped.  WH were desperate to play after two cancellations and were reluctant to re-arrange the fixture.  Eventually it was agreed that the game would go ahead as a friendly mix-up but early on Friday evening our luck changed when the W4s’ opposition had to concede the game through lack of players and we were actually able to take to the pitch with a squad of 13.  Woo hoo!

Southgate were in the ascendancy from the start and rarely relinquished that control throughout the game.  The first ten minutes saw us attacking mainly down the right with Amba and Sally combining well.  Some adroit passing through the centre and transferring around the back enabled the visitors to win several short corners with Anna stepping in for a hard strike from the centre of the D and Megs on hand to deflect the ball skilfully into the net.  Before the half was up further scoring chances presented themselves and Amba was on hand to put away the second goal.

Playing conditions deteriorated in the second half as sleet began to fall in the cold wind.  WH now upped their game and their efforts resulted in several short corners, all thwarted by Kathy’s quick responses as the first runner.  There was more ebb and flow to the game but SG continued to hold the upper hand with birthday girl Amba able to slot in her second goal of the day and Anna on the scoreboard again with another strong shot from the top of the D.

After the ups and downs of the week we were able to pull off what had looked like an unlikely win, keeping a clean sheet and going into our final game before the Christmas break at the top of the league!

Overwhelming choice for MVP this week was Amba for contributing two goals and a strong performance in defence.

Next game is H&W7s away, time tba.
