The Big Blue Tournament

Tankards vs Redbridge B

W 2-0

Report by Neil Murphy

For many of us this was the first time playing at the Olympic Park, following in the footsteps of our GB international colleagues. Not quite a capacity crowd and so no issues with social distancing, our travelling supporters gave plenty of encouragement. However, mostly the hockey on offer was more a reflection of the cold, inclement weather. Our Redbridge opposition was a similar mix of youth and experience for this inaugural Big Blue match.

Our younger players, Sohan, David and Fergus had strong games constantly threatening Redbridge’s defence with the middle of the field well controlled by (the not so young) Ali and Will. Nevertheless a tricky pitch and determined opposition defence resulted in numerous unforced errors. A stronger second half performance, better use of the width of the pitch and stronger passing allowed us to take control with goals from [Alastair] and [Fergus]. As a result, nil-nil at half time ended up a 2-0 victory. David James was deservedly Man of the Match for another impressive display at right back, shoring up the defence and constantly launching attacks.
