Match Report : Elisa Filarmonico
Result : Southgate 3-0 Horsham
Despite a stressful car journey for some, and a traumatic toilet experience in the woods for others (I’ll spare you the details), Southgate got off to a flying start dominating the opening minutes of the first quarter.
Some nice play between the midfield and forward lines earnt the team an early short corner. A perfectly executed routine which involved a Milly Powers delivery was tapped home by Emma Macintyre. 1-0 to the Gate.
Horsham responded with a couple of quick breaks, however the Southgate defence, spearheaded by junior GK Mollie Smith, nullified any oncoming threats. More of the same positive play by Southgate in the second quarter resulted in several short corner wins. Another slick routine, this time involving Lorna Cruickshank who knocked in a ball delivered from captain Charlotte Childs, enabled the team to double their lead.
In the final quarter, Southgate further extended their lead through another successful penalty corner routine. The incoming shot from Amy Kokkinos (which was on target) was stolen inches before the goal line by Lorna Cruikshank in a desperate attempt to claim the team’s top goal scorer prize.
In the dying minutes of the game Horsham picked up momentum against a 10 man Southgate team, however it was too late, and Southgate left with three points firmly in hand… and Emily Ruffel Hazel still looking for some loo roll to clean up her mess.
The Southgate L1s currently sit second in the table and are two points behind rivals Barnes, with everything still to play for.
