W1 qualify for Div 2 Finals after outstanding indoor display in Bristol

Super 6s Championship Women’s Division Two (South)

Report by Jonnie Robinson

Southgate have progressed (for the first time?) to the Super 6s Championship Women’s Division Two
Finals after an exciting weekend of indoor hockey in Bristol. Conceding two early goals in the opening
match against Clifton proved costly in a game that remained in the balance until the final quarter
(Clifton eventually winning 8-4), but Saturday finished on a high note with an impressive 9-2 victory
against British Army Women. Despite Southgate dominating possession and territory for large
periods in the first game on Sunday, Lansdown’s structured press and more clinical finishing were the
decisive factors in a 7-2 loss, but a deserved 2-1 victory against Team Bath Buccaneers and a tense
3-3 draw with Old Georgians secured qualification. We now have an opportunity to face Clifton and
Lansdown again and to play Cambridge University, Wakefield and Birmingham University for the
Division Two Championship on 20th and 21st January in Telford.

Congratulations to the whole squad for an outstanding performance both on court and in the hotel
(where restaurant staff informed us we were by a considerable margin ‘the politest and best
behaved’ sports team they’d ever encountered!).
